Word: Abba (Aramaic) or Pater (Greek)

Translated: Father

Use: “Abba” expresses the special relationship that exists between a believer and God.  It is a term of intimacy and is better translated as ‘daddy’. While the Hebrew equivalent is used only 15 times in the OT in reference to God, ‘Abba’ or “Pater’ is used 245 times in the NT – a dramatic expression of the closeness every believer has with God as a result of believing in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Translated: Master or Sovereign Lord.

Meaning: Another way of looking at this word is ‘slave owner’. When we use the word ‘despote’ it conjures up the thought of ‘unfairly authoritative’. This idea is not found in either the Greek word or the English word. Rather, the idea is neutral and simply signifies an authoritative master.

Use: ‘Theos’ is the NT equivalent of ELohim. In the LXX (the Septuagint or the Greek translation of the OT) it is the most frequently used name for God (used over 1,200 times in the NT.

Use: a very specific name that leaves no room for doubt about God’s identity. He has called Himself YHWH and He is the One who has disclosed Himself specially and specifically through special revelation to Israel.

THE NAMES OF GOD

There are only two more Hebrew Names of God. Once we have completed this we will look at the New Testament Names of God.

Word: YHWH Shammah

Translated: the LORD is there!

Use: The only use of this Name of God is found in Ezekiel 48:35 and is found in a section dealing with the future restoration of Israel. When the kingdom is restored to the followers of God in the Land of Canaan, a new Temple will be constructed (Ez 40:1-43:27) and a new worship of God on earth will be temporarily reinstated (Ez 44:1-46:24). The peoples of the world will flock to Jerusalem for the worship of God and thus the name YHWH Shammah because they will be worshipping the Only and Universal God whose ‘house’ is in Jersualem.

Meaning: God’s loving care for His people who provides protection and provides for those under His care.

Names of God – YHWH Maccaddeschcem

Word: YHWH Maccaddeschcem

Translated: the LORD our sanctifier

Meaning: the One who makes man holy, or the One who sets man apart.  If you will remember an early devotion, to sanctify means to set apart or to separate for another’s use, i.e. to make holy. Although the Old Testament is replete with commands for man to be sanctified (an impossible task because of the sin nature inherited from Adam), we see in this name of God the foundation of sanctification – God Himself. He alone is the only One who can sanctify man, and He did this through the work of His Son on the cross.
