God’s Uniqueness

The Attributes of God

For the previous six years I have been teaching a course on the Attributes of God at the Moscow Bible College. From the beginning it has been my desire and contention that the best way to deepen ones knowledge and walk with God is to study the Attributes or Character of God. While this study cannot be as in depth as I would like it to be, there are several excellent books that can go a little deeper as well as many others that begin to plumb the depths of who He is. My goal will be to introduce the Attributes of God as identified in Scripture. Since I have identified 31 Attributes in the Bible, our study will encompass six weeks.

As we begin our devotional study of the Attributes of God, it is necessary to define an attribute. An attribute is a quality or essence inherent in a person. It shows the character or reputation of an individual.

As it relates to God, an attribute can either be communicable or incommunicable. A communicable attribute is one that God shares to some degree with His creation. An incommunicable attribute is one that God to a much lesser degree shares with His creation. In the past, communicable was defined as a quality of God that He shared with His creation while an incommunicable attribute was one that He did not share with His creation. A careful study of the attributes will show these latter definitions to be too extreme because traces of an incommunicable attribute can be seen in man.

This week our study will focus on the following incommunicable attributes of God:

His Uniqueness, His Immutability, His Independence, His Transcendance and His Invisibility.

GOD’S UNIQUENESS

To be unique is to be without a duplicate. There is no duplicate of God, there is no one like Him. He is peerless and matchless. As a result He is exalted above His creation.

NAU Isaiah 46:9 “Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me,

NIV Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.

KJV Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

NAU 2 Samuel 7:22 “For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

NIV 2 Samuel 7:22 “How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

KJV 2 Samuel 7:22 Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

NAU Jeremiah 10:6 There is none like You, O LORD; You are great, and great is Your name in might.

NIV Jeremiah 10:6 No one is like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.

KJV Jeremiah 10:6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
