Names of God – YHWH Sabbaoth

THURSDAY

Word: YHWH Sabbaoth

Translated: the LORD of hosts

Meaning: ‘The Great Protector’ emphasizing the sovereignty and omnipotence of God. This term is used often by Isaiah and Jeremiah whose prophetic work was prominent during times of national crisis in Israel. Therefore, it is a name of encouragement when times are tough because of ones own failures. Used 258 times in the OT.

NAU Joshua 5:14
He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the LORD.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?”

NIV Joshua 5:14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”

KJV Joshua 5:14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

BTW: In this context, this reference of YHWH Sabbaoth is identified as the pre-incarnate Christ (see verse 15).

NAU Psalm 24:10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.

NIV Psalm 24:10 Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty— he is the King of glory. Selah

KJV Psalm 24:10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.
