Names of God – YHWH Shammah

MONDAY

THE NAMES OF GOD

There are only two more Hebrew Names of God. Once we have completed this we will look at the New Testament Names of God.

Word: YHWH Shammah

Translated: the LORD is there!

Use: The only use of this Name of God is found in Ezekiel 48:35 and is found in a section dealing with the future restoration of Israel. When the kingdom is restored to the followers of God in the Land of Canaan, a new Temple will be constructed (Ez 40:1-43:27) and a new worship of God on earth will be temporarily reinstated (Ez 44:1-46:24). The peoples of the world will flock to Jerusalem for the worship of God and thus the name YHWH Shammah because they will be worshipping the Only and Universal God whose ‘house’ is in Jersualem.

NAU Ezekiel 48:35The city shall be 18,000 cubits round about; and the name of the city from that day shall be, ‘The LORD is there.'”

NIV Ezekiel 48:35 “The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits. “And the name of the city from that time on will be: THE LORD IS THERE.”

KJV Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.

FRIDAY

Word: YHWH Raah

Translated: the LORD our shepherd

Meaning: God’s loving care for His people who provides protection and provides for those under His care.

NAU Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

NIV Psalm 23:1 A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

KJV Psalm 23:1 <A Psalm of David.> The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Names of God – YHWH Maccaddeschcem

THURSDAY

Word: YHWH Maccaddeschcem

Translated: the LORD our sanctifier

Meaning: the One who makes man holy, or the One who sets man apart.  If you will remember an early devotion, to sanctify means to set apart or to separate for another’s use, i.e. to make holy. Although the Old Testament is replete with commands for man to be sanctified (an impossible task because of the sin nature inherited from Adam), we see in this name of God the foundation of sanctification – God Himself. He alone is the only One who can sanctify man, and He did this through the work of His Son on the cross.

NAU Leviticus 20:7 ‘You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. 8 ‘You shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

NIV Leviticus 20:7 “‘Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. 8 Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy.

KJV Leviticus 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. 8 And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you.

Names of God – YHWH Tsidkenu

WEDNESDAY

Word: YHWH Tsidkenu

Translated: the LORD our righteousness

Meaning: the God who is the one and only source of true righteousness. It is not our effort that results in our righteousness (indeed He tells us that we have none to offer – Isaiah 64:6 ‘All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away’). Instead, it is His work through His Son on the cross substituting Himself in our place to bear a punishment we deserve (but cannot pay) in order to receive His declaration of righteousness that we do not deserve but receive by faith!

NAU Jeremiah 23:6 “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, ‘The LORD our righteousness.’

NIV Jeremiah 23:6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

KJV Jeremiah 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Names of God-YHWH Nissi

TUESDAY

Word: YHWH Nissi

Translated: ‘the LORD is my banner

Meaning: The battle is the LORD’s. The ‘flag bearer’ led the Army into battle, so this name pictures God as the One who not only leads His people into battle but fights the battle for them. Two major pictures of God’s leadership are seen in Joshua 5:13-15 when Joshua is ready to begin the conquest of Jericho, and Revelation 19:11-16 at the battle of Armeggeddon before the ushering in of the millennial kingdom.

NAU Exodus 17:14
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this in a book as a memorial and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and named it The LORD is My Banner;

NIV Exodus 17:14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.

KJV Exodus 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. 15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

Names of God – YHWH Shalom

MONDAY

THE NAMES OF GOD

Word: YHWH Shalom

Meaning: the LORD is peace. ‘Shalom’ conveys the concept of being tensionless or lacking tension. The word pictures the absence of conflict or strife with God. In its only reference listed below, God confers peace upon Gideon and commands him to rest in the peace that He is giving. It is a picture of the peace given to people who place their confidence in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

NAU Judges 6:23 The LORD said to him, “Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die.” 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and named it The LORD is Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

NIV Judges 6:23 But the LORD said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.” 24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

KJV Judges 6:23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Names of God – YHWY Rophe

FRIDAY

Word: YHWH Rophe (or Rapha)

Translated: the LORD who heals

Meaning: the God who heals both physically and spiritually. Used only once in the OT.

NAU Exodus 15:26 And He said, “If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer.”

NIV Exodus 15:26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.”

KJV Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
