Understanding, Interpretation and Application of Scripture

FRIDAY

And finally, after God has prepared His man, revealed His will to the prepared man, recorded and preserved His revealed will, we come to the most important part – understanding, interpreting and applying God’s will in our life. There are many verses emphasizing the point that understanding God’s Word is the result of God making it understood to man (not man figuring it out on his own). David encouraged us to pray (ask God) for understanding and Paul is an example in action. The fancy word for God’s work in providing understanding for His Word is illumination which is a work of the Holy Spirit.

The Prayer

NAU Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law.

NIV Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

KJV Psalm 119:18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

The Action

NAU Ephesians 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

NIV Ephesians 1:18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

KJV Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

INTERPRETATION

Interpretation is the fruit of study. There are two types of interpretation – allegorical and literal. Allegorical study teaches that there is a hidden meaning behind the words of Scripture that need to searched out. The allegorical method indicates that the words of Scripture are merely symbols. The preferred method of interpretation is literal, grammatical and historical which means that words have a definite, unhidden meaning that can be understood by putting them into their grammatical and historical setting.

APPLICATION

God can prepare the man, reveal, record and preserve His Word, and cause a man to understand His Word. But if the last component of our study is not being practiced then it is all for naught. Unless a man puts into action and applies the revealed will of God, all this has been a waste of time.

NAU James 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

NIV James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

KJV James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
