Ephesians 2:8

THURSDAY

NAU Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

NIV Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith– and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–

KJV Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

The NAU and NIV get the award for ‘best’ translation today because they capture the perfect passive participle in translating the word ‘saved’. The ‘passive’ voice reinforces that salvation is not the work of man but Someone outside of man, namely God Himself.  It is His work and His grace that brings a man into a relationship with Him. These are His gift(s) to the redeemed.

And there is one other thing gifted by God to man that results in man being brought into a relationship with God – the faith to receive His grace.  Verse 9 gives the reason this is true – that no man can boast in God’s work of salvation.

NAU Ephesians 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

NIV Ephesians 2:9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

KJV Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
