A New Residence

FRIDAY

A NEW RESIDENCE

Ultimately, those who participate by faith in the New Covenant will enjoy a NEW residence! The ‘OLD’ is so corrupted by sin that a ‘NEW’ is a necessity!

NAU Revelation 21:5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

NIV Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

KJV Revelation 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

First promised to Israel:

NAU Isaiah 65:17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.

NIV Isaiah 65:17 “Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

KJV Isaiah 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. {come…: Heb. come upon the heart}

NAU Isaiah 66:22 “For just as the new heavens and the new earth Which I make will endure before Me,” declares the LORD, “So your offspring and your name will endure.

NIV Isaiah 66:22 “As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me,” declares the LORD, “so will your name and descendants endure.

KJV Isaiah 66:22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

Later, the promise expanded to include all who trust in the finished work of the Messiah:

NAU 2 Peter 3:13
But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

NIV 2 Peter 3:13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

KJV 2 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness

NAU Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

NIV Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

KJV Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

A New Command

THURSDAY

A NEW COMMANDMENT

The NEW Life is controlled by a NEW Command – LOVE one another! We are commanded by Jesus to love sacrificially (not emotionally) in service toward others.

NAU John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

NIV John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

KJV John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

NAU 1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

NIV 1 John 5:2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

KJV 1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

NAU 2 John 1:5
Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.

NIV 2 John 1:5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another.

KJV 2 John 1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

New Creatures

WEDNESDAY

NEW CREATURES

When we enter the NEW Covenant by faith in the finished work of Jesus, the Messiah, we are transformed by God (not our works) and prepared for the entering into His presence.

NAU Galatians 6:15
For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

NIV Galatians 6:15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.

KJV Galatians 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

AN UNDETECTED/UNFELT BUT REAL NONETHELESS TRANSFORMATION

NAU 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

NIV 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

KJV 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. {he is: or, let him be}

Ephesians uses kainos to emphasize the newness of form or quality. We are no longer to live like we did before our faith transformed life – we are to live a new life of appreciation expressed by obedience, confession of sin and repentance.

NAU Ephesians 4:24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

NIV Ephesians 4:24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

KJV Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. {true…: or, holiness of truth}

In Colossians, Paul uses the word neos to express that although this faith transformed life in NEW in TIME (and therefore, by implication not consistently practiced) it is still a quality of life to be pursued.

NAU Colossians 3:10
and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him–

NIV Colossians 3:10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

KJV Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

New Covenant

TUESDAY

A NEW COVENANT

Man’s history as stated in the Hebrew Scriptures demonstrates that the Old covenants were not doing the job. God was faithful but His people (and all mankind) were Unfaithful. Something NEW must be done and God did it. He made a New Covenant with an expanded beneficiary. The New Covenant was given to Israel but we find in the New Testament that it was expanded to include non-Israelites as well.

THE PROMISE TO ISRAEL

NAU Jeremiah 31:31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

NIV Jeremiah 31:31 “The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

KJV Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

THE EXPANDED FULFILLMENT

What Jeremiah prophesied for Israel became a reality for all who placed their faith in the work of Messiah on the cross.

NAU 2 Corinthians 3:6
who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

NIV 2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant– not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

KJV 2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. {giveth life: or, quickeneth

Jesus (reiterated by Paul) taught about how to celebrate our participation in the New Covenant.

NAU 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

NIV 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

KJV 1 Corinthians 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Other pertinent and related Scriptures: Heb 8:8; 8:13; 9:15; 12:24.

NEWNESS

NEWNESS

MONDAY

Since we are beginning a NEW Year and a time of NEW resolutions, it makes sense to look at the use of NEW in the Bible.  The Greek language uses two words to make a distinction between ‘newness’. There is ‘newness in form and quality’ (kainos) and ‘newness in respect to time’ (neos). The word used predominantly in the New Testament and in the LXX (Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures) is kainos – ‘new in form and quality’ although as we will see later in the week, neos (although infrequently used) is utilized in a clarifying way.

We will begin by looking at the promise by God in the Hebrew Scriptures of a “NEW” heart and spirit. Remember, when we speak of ‘newness’ we are speaking of new in form or quality. The Book of Ezekiel is rich with the ‘newness’ concept. Very simply there is a promise, a call and a provision. Originally it is promised and called for from Israel. The new heart and spirit is new in form or quality – the old cannot work – it must be changed!

A NEW HEART/SPIRIT

THE PROMISE –
God has promised a ‘new’ spirit within sinful Israel. A ‘new’ spirit is needed because the ‘old’ is corrupted by sin. This is true not only of Israel but ALL mankind – there are none good, not even one!

NAU Ezekiel 11:19
“And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,

NIV Ezekiel 11:19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.

KJV Ezekiel 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

THE CALL – God called Israel to change their attitudes and actions. They found this (as we find today) an impossible task to do completely and consistently.

NAU Ezekiel 18:31
“Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel?

NIV Ezekiel 18:31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel?

KJV Ezekiel 18:31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

THE PROVISION –
While man finds the task of making for himself a new, uncorrupted heart and spirit, God promises He will provide one. Ultimately He did – after the days of Ezekiel in the finished work of Jesus the Messiah that we access by faith!

NAU Ezekiel 36:26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

NIV Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

KJV Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
