Resurrection Proofs

FRIDAY

What proof is there of the resurrection of Jesus?

There is the historical record from the Gospels:

NAU John 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” 3 So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. 4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5 and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. 6 And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.  Cp Matthew 28:1-11; Mark 16; Luke 24

Facts from the narrative(s):

Jesus was Dead;

Jesus was laid to rest in a tomb;

Jesus’ tomb was sealed with an immense stone;

Jesus tomb was secured with a seal (Matt27:66);

Jesus’ tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers (Matt 27:62-22);

There is angelic testimony to the resurrection:

NAU Matthew 28:5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified 6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7 “Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

There is the testimony of Jesus’ enemies:

 NAU Matthew 28:11 Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13 and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’ 14 “And if this should come to the governor’s ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble.” 15 And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely spread among the Jews, and is to this day.

There is the testimony of those He appeared to after the resurrection:

NAU 1 Corinthians 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also (Paul).

He appeared in His resurrection body to:

The Mary’s (john 20:14; Matt 28:9, 10);

Peter (Luke 24:34);

The Emmaus disciples (Luke 24: 13-33);

The twelve without Thomas (John 20: 19-24);

The twelve with Thomas (John 20:26-29);

The seven at Tibereas (John 21:1-23);

500 other brothers;

James ( 1 Cor 15:7);

The Apostles (Luke 24:33-52);

Paul (Acts 9:3-6);

Stephen (Acts 7:55);

Paul (Acts 22:17-21; 23:11) and

John on Patmos (Rev 1:10-19)

Holy Spirit Involvement

THURSDAY

But did the Holy Spirit have a role in the resurrection of the Son of God?

NAU Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

NIV Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

KJV Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. {by: or, because of}

All three members of the Trinity were involved in the resurrection of Jesus.

Unique Self-resurrection

WEDNESDAY

Were there any other members of the Trinity involved in the resurrection of Jesus?

NAU John 10:18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

NIV John 10:18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

KJV John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Jesus tells us in His own words that He also had the power not only to lay down His life but to take it back again – after all, He did claim to be God and demonstrated this truth through miracles, especially with His own resurrection!

Involvement by the Trinity

TUESDAY

Just how many members of the Trinity were involved in the resurrection of Jesus? That is the question we will answer over the next few days.

NAU Acts 2:24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.

NIV Acts 2:24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

KJV Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

At the minimum, there was one member of the Trinity involved in the resurrection of Jesus – the Father!

The Necessity of the Resurrection

MONDAY

The posting is late today because I have really had a difficult time settling on a topic.  If you have suggestions, send me an email.  But I chose the Resurrection as a topic because we have so recently celebrated the event.  After all, Paul tells us that without the resurrection of Jesus, Christianity is a vain religion:

NAU 1 Corinthians 15:13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.

So, this week we will see the foretelling of the resurrection of Messiah, the members of the Trinity involved in accomplishing the resurrection and the purpose of the resurrection.

We are told that the resurrection fulfilled all Scripture:

NAU Luke 24:46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,

Where was it written that the Messiah must suffer, die and rise again from the dead?

Foretold:

NAU Psalm 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.

NIV Psalm 16:10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, {10 Hebrew Sheol} nor will you let your Holy One {10 Or your faithful one} see decay.

KJV Psalm 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Verification:

NAU Acts 13:34As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and SURE blessings OF DAVID.’ 35 “Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.’

NIV Acts 13:34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: “‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’ {34 Isaiah 55:3} 35 So it is stated elsewhere: “‘You will not let your Holy One see decay.’ {35 Psalm 16:10}

KJV Acts 13:34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. {mercies: Gr. holy, or just things: which word the Septuagint in many places, uses for that which is in the Hebrew,  35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.mercies}

Foretold:

NAU Isaiah 53:10  But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.

Verification:

NAU 1 Corinthians 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

NIV 1 Corinthians 15:4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

KJV 1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
